Throughout my public career -- including my time as President
Reagan's Secretary of Education and President George H. W. Bush's
Drug Czar -- I have had the privilege publicly to defend time-honored
values and our most important institutions. In our time,
when many of those values and institutions are under siege, we
all need to stand up and defend what we believe in.
I support the people of The Center for American
Cultural Renewal in their efforts to preserve
marriage as a union -- a sacred union -- between one man
and one woman. We must recognize that the nuclear family
is the foundation of our society and work to protect that
family in law. During the last four decades, the American
family has suffered grievous damage. Our efforts must
be to promote and protect marriage, not to weaken it further.
